What to Do After Falling Back into Sin

Backsliding is one of the most challenging problems among Christians. It’s a terrible situation, especially for people with various sorts of addictions. However, backsliding should never be seen as a death sentence in Christianity. Instead, backsliding should give you a second chance of realizing your weakness.

Once you realize your weakness, returning to God shouldn’t be shameful. God hates sin but loves a sinner so much. Giving out a son to die for humanity by hanging on the Cross is the best definition of how much God loves us. Therefore, walk back to him in tears and weeping.

Acknowledge that you lost your way. Surrender yourself at his mercy, having perfect contrition for your faults. Renew your baptismal vows to God while rebuking the devil. As you do that, reject the devil with all his works. Ask God to cover your life with the precious blood of Jesus.

How to Avoid Backsliding

  1. Avoid all occasions that lead to sin: You need to avoid all the situations that lead you into sin. If you struggle with alcohol, you need to avoid the pubs and the wrong friends. Ask the Holy Spirit to strengthen you.

2. Focus more on God: God knows all our weaknesses and wants to help. However, it would be best if you drew near to him. Let him take all that’s impure in you and renew your spirit.

3. Join a Christian group: If you find it hard experiencing God on your own, it’s time to join a Christian group. It could be a Bible study group or fellowship. As you engage with other members, God will help you. He will help you in your journey of knowing the truth.

Returning to God in Three Steps

1. Forgive yourself

Forgiveness is vital in the healing of a broken soul. Forgiveness allows the pain you feel inside to leave and never come back. If returning to God seems so hard, then you need to forgive yourself. Forgiveness is the gate pass to repentance and healing.

You need to forgive yourself for God’s mercy to penetrate your heart. Self-forgiveness allows you to learn from your mistakes. However, most people don’t know the great power behind forgiving. I used to be the type that never forgave. Life was miserable until I learned the power of forgiveness.

Forgiving gave me peace in my life. It unshackled all the chains that kept me active. Forgiveness gave Jesus a chance to work in me and bring transformation in my life. Likewise, forgive yourself and others who might have wronged you in so many ways. All chains will leave you if you accept to forgive yourself.

2. Read the Scripture

Have you ever felt so worthless, and upon opening the Bible, you find some encouraging words? Well, that’s how God speaks to us. He allows us to experience him at our desperate moments. Reading the scriptures will not only strengthen your soul, but it will also help you fight your struggles.

Remember the time when Satan tempted our Lord, and he used the word of God to rebuke Satan. Satan doesn’t want you to read the word of God. To stop you, he brings laziness and boredom upon you so that you won’t read the Bible. You need to fight him off by praying, especially in the morning.

Always claim the word of God as you read. There is power in claiming the word of God. As you do this, thank him for what he’s done and what he’s doing. Then, have faith in the word of God.

3. Pray

Through prayer, we express ourselves to God and get to listen to him. Make it a habit to speak to God through Prayer. Kneel and express yourself to the one who listens. He is a merciful Father; he is always waiting for you to come to him.

As you pray, begin by forgiving all those that have wronged you. Moreover, don’t forget to forgive yourself. Sing out praise and worship to God, expressing your surrender. Express in utmost sincerity how you find returning to God hard.

Ask God to grant you the Holy Spirit. The spirit that saves and defeats all the works of the enemy. Above all, believe that God forgave your sins immediately after you confessed. At this point, guilt should be long gone while faith dominates your heart.

Don’t forget to bring in humility in your prayer. God loves people who are humble and hates pride.

The Verdict

Don’t let a guilty conscience prevent you from returning to God. Pray, hope, and worry not. Our God is loving and merciful. He will never let you go, no matter your sins.

Moreover, keep your faith up by reading the Bible and meditating. Claim the blessings as you speak the word of God in your life. Reject Satan and all his works as you command him to go under the feet of Jesus at the Cross. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you understand the word of God.
